Anne Sophia Harvey's servants, 1829-1845

From Anne Sophia Harvey's account books Domestic Expenditure, [from] 1 January 1829 (brown leather), and Anne Sophia Harvey's Household Expenditure, 1 July 1838, which ends in December 1842, part of Library's extensive Harvey Collection. Anne Sophia Grut (1802-1844) was daughter of Peter Grut and Anne Collings, and married John Harvey. The illustration is a detail from a 'Moss' print of 1841, Market Place, Guernsey, in the Library Collection.

Kitty Ingrouille has entered our service once more on the 25 June 1829 instead of Patty Collenette.
Sarah Munsen has entered our service instead of Kitty Ingrouille on Monday 23 March 1830. Her wages are to be £7 per annum.
Mary Lowe has entered our service instead of Sarah Munsen on Wednesday 23 February 1831. Her wages are to be £7 per annum.
Kitty Ingrouille has entered our service as cook on 17 September 1832 at the rate of £7-10 per annum.
Mary Lowe has entered into the situation of nursemaid on 15 September 1832, at the rate of £6-0-0 per annum.
Mary Gempton has entered our service as cook on 7 November 1932 at the rate of £7 per annum.
Kitty Ingrouille has returned to us on the 8 December at £7-10 per annum.

Betsey Harriet Mary Ann Pouch entered our service as nursemaid at the rate of £6-0-0 per annum on the 5 February 1833.
Jane Williamson entered our service as cook, instead of Kitty, whose husband returned from sea, on the 5 May 1833, at the rate of £7 stg per annum.
Mary Ann Peters has entered our service instead of Betsy Pouch as nursemaid at the rate of £7 -0-0 per annum on 5 August 1833.
Emma Sherry entered our service as cook, in the place of Jane Williamson (who had taken the situation of nursemaid instead of M Peters on 23 December 1833,) at the rate of £7-0-0 per annum.
Elizabeth Ellary has entered our service in Emma Sherry's place on 28 February 1834 at £7-10 the first six months and £8-0 stg per annum afterwards if she suits us.
Belinda Ellery entered our service as nursemaid in Jane Williamson's place on 26 May 1834, at the rate of £7-0-90 stg wages per annum, Jane having left us on 28 May to live with Mrs William Maingy, in Russia. Mrs M advanced her wages to purchase a fit-out of which she has sent her a list, pays for the making and washing of everything, and gives her £10 stg a year as housemaid.
Mrs Gaighan has entered our service as wet-nurse on 27 August 1834. Her wages are to be six shillings a week and she undertakes the duties of Belinda, besides the baby in consequence of which we have dismissed the nursery maid.
Household Expenditure beginning 1 July 1838
24 July 1838. Susan Hadly [Hadley?] has entered our service as cook instead of Anna Morris, at the rate of £7-10 per annum.
Molly Hamon has entered our service as nursemaid, at the rate of £5 stg. the first year, £5-10 the second year & £6 stg. the third year; Mary Ebenston [Ebinston] leaving, in consequence of Thomas being weaned, 23 August 1838.
Tamsen Winter [Tamsin] (Mrs Allanton) has entered our service as cook, on 22 October 1838, at the rate of £8 stg. per annum.
Judith Hamon has entered our service as nursemaid at the rate of £5 stg. the first year, £5-10 the second year & £6 stg. the third year; Molly Hamon having taken cook's place on 24 August 1839.
Molly has engaged as cook instead of Tamsen Winter, at the rate of £6 stg. the first year; £6-10 the second year and £7 stg. the third year, on 24 August 1839.
Elizabeth Hill has engaged as nursemaid at the rate of £7 stg. wages on 24 June 1841.
Elizabeth Torode has entered our service as cook instead of Molly, on 7 November 1839 at the rate of £7-10 per annum & 10/1 at New Years.
Aimée Demay has entered our service instead of Judith as nursemaid on 7 November 1839 at the rate of £5 stg. per annum & a gown at New Years.
Elizabeth Torode has left our service on 17 December 1839, & Aimee Demay has engaged herself maid of all work at the rate of £7-10 from that date, having decided to keep only one servant for the present.
Aimée returned to us after an illness of a fortnight, on 11 April.
Johanne Hill has entered our service as maid of all work at £7 per annum on 10 July 1839.

Susan Falaize [Fallaize] has entered our service as nursemaid at the rate of £7 per annum on 7 April 1841, Mary Le Page having left in consequence of baby being weaned.
Susannah Gartrell has entered our service as maid of all work on 10 January 1842 at the rate of £7 stg. wages per annum.
Nancy Opin (?) has entered our service as wetnurse on 3 June 1842, & left us in consequence of indisposition on 19 August following.
Emma Carter has entered our service as wetnurse in Nancy's stead, on 16 August 1842 at the rate of 5/1 per week.
Mary Ann Gleeson has entered our service on Friday 12 August 1842 at the rate of £3 stg. per annum.
Mary Haines (Harries?) has entered our service on Monday 7 November at £8 stg. per annum.
Betsey Coombes has entered our service as cook on 24 January 1843 at the rate of £8 stg. per annum, no New Year's.
Mary Ann Williams has entered our service as cook on 27 March 1843 at the rate of £7-10 per annum and no presents.
