Spirit of adventure: Violetta Thurstan

'Guernsey readers will read with interest of the adventure of Miss Violetta Thurstan, who is managing an ambulance unit in Spain.' This article, from the Star newspaper of April 1, 1937, recalls her war service and brings readers up to date with her activities in the Spanish Civil War. Violetta received the Mons Star, the Russian Royal Cross of St George, and, twice wounded, was awarded the Military Medal.

A letter from the front; by a Guernsey City Imperial, June 1900
From the Star, June 7 1900. Sent from Wynburg, Orange Free State, and dated May 5, 1900. The author of this and other letters was Roland W. Mourant, of the City Imperial Volunteers (C.I.V.). He was son of James Mourant, of Gloucester House, High Street, a funeral director.
Tipperary, February 1915
From The Star, February 11, 1915. To much apparent jubilation, permission had been granted in this month to form a new Double Company of the Guernsey Militia from existing recruits. The 227 members had to be decided by ballot on the 5th February, as there were over 250 eligible men. The new Double Company was to be attached to the 6th Service Battalion of the Royal Irish regiment and was to leave the island for Fermoy to train before proceeding quickly to the front.

His Excellency the General Officer Commanding has authorised in the public interest the publication of the following extracts from a letter received from a non-commissioned officer at the front, and the statement that every consideration will be given to the promotion of those men who have passed through the fiery furnace of this war. Annual examination at the Vauxbelets, July 1911
The annual examinations in Agriculture, Horticulture, Chemistry, Engineering and English took place at the Vauxbelets Schools. Examiners from the Société d'Agriculture de France came to the island especially to conduct some of the examinations, which were all oral. There were fifteen first year pupils and five second year pupils.
