Walter St John: background material
The Library is very grateful indeed to Sophie Cummings of Lydiard House and Park, Wiltshire, who sent us some fascinating background material to the story of Walter St John.
This includes articles on Walter and Anne Leighton; an up-to-date guidebook to Lydiard House itself; images of the church and the St John monument; and beautiful contemporary portraits of Anne Leighton and John St John. The St John family all sport various shades of strawberry blond to deep red hair, but of course this may only have reflected the fashion at the time; as John is only 17 in his (very dashing) portrait, we can perhaps get some idea of how his brother Walter may have looked. The monumental painting in Lydiard Tregoze church also depicts John and Anne, a little older, as well as the rest of the family. This material is available for consultation at the Library.
